Musical Mystery Tour – Music For Children

Simon Mayor and Hilary James

Original songs, tunes, choruses, humorous sketches and audience participation. The one hour Musical Mystery Tour show features a wide variety of musical instruments to see and hear: the mandobass, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, Victorian bodiless fiddle, ukulele and percussion. Sing along with the Parrot-Parrot from Hong-Hong-Kong-Kong and twist your tongue around the Flock of Fat Flamingoes.

‘At the end, you could see the little ones brimming over with enthusiasm for music, and a few of the parents ruing the day they gave up learning the violin.’
The Stage

‘I have never seen anyone explain the workings of a mandobass – essentially a cross between a mandolin and a double bass – to children before. Simon Mayor and Hilary James have the remarkable ability to do so, while putting across ideas about sound and rhythm in a way that very young children can understand. And they are entertaining with it.’

Musical Mystery Tour albums

These five albums of original songs and sketches for children (many written for BBC TV and radio) achieve cult status among all who hear them…

‘What has always impressed me about the recordings of James and Mayor is their unnerving instrumental ability and ingenious,
especially on their children’s recordings, witty and hypnotic stories that they put to music.’

Rock ‘n’ Reel

‘… had my kids dancing and singing and asking for repeated plays. And when the kids were in bed, I snuck another couple
of private hearings for myself. Absolutely flawlessly performed, the singing is deadpan and tuneful and done with immaculate precision, while the instrumental playing on guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo etc, well…words fail me.’
